Language Arts: In language arts we will cover a variety of genres and text formats. We will also be using the "Imagine It" reading series, and our first unit topic will be "Friendship". Students will be encouraged to bring in items that relate to friendship. Click the link below to view our pacing guide and the link to the common core standards to better understand what our students will be expected to do.
Mathematics: In math we will focus on 5 main strands: Numbers in base ten, geometry, fractions, order of operations/algebraic thinking, and measurement. Students will have opportunities to learn and apply their math skills in real world, problem based learning tasks. For example students may have to use their addition and subtraction skills to plan a menu, budget for decorations, entertainment for their family reunion, all while staying in a budget. This will allow students to apply math skills to situations they may encounter as adults.
Science: Our science curriculum will be based on inquiry based principles. These principles are:
- Use of scientific investigation, problem solving,
- Hands on–minds on instructional strategies
- Use of Process skills in context- predict, observe, measure, classify, infer, communicate
- Peer Discussion – scientific arguments and explanations
- Using appropriate tools accurately
- Focus on detail - precision & accuracy in observations and measurements, Use of collaboration for learning
